Change of Course

Do your people ever find themselves struggling to optimize their productivity and consistently create the results they desire amidst an ever-increasing sea of change? Are you searching for ways to help them maximize more of their potential while working within a complex group or team environment? Are you ever frustrated by inefficiencies driven by the divisions that crop up between individuals and groups within your organization? Perhaps it's time for a Change of Course!
Welcome to the world of yacht racing, where you and your crew must attempt to maintain and modify a vessel that will be able to compete in the prestigious "International Cup." Your crew's goal: Earn as much money as possible over the course of the race season. Each heat will take place on one of three courses. Your boat will perform differently on each course. Choose your heats carefully. Stay on course, and you'll probably do well. But always be alert. At the very last minute, someone might insist on a change of course.

What is Change of Course?
Change of Course is a fun, fast paced interactive learning experience that focuses on performing in a changing and uncertain environment. In order to do well, teams must move quickly, build strategic partnerships, act decisively and be ready to change in midstream. Most importantly, participants must stay focused on and remain accountable for their own results. Collaboration is key, but in the end does not guarantee success. Competitiveness is critical, but at what expense? Change of Course allows participants to experience the tensions between competitiveness and collaboration in a fun and practical way.
Change of Course places participants in an environment that demands quick thinking, foresight and a readiness to change course. The old rules of building a plan and sticking to it may not work. In order to remain productive, new relationships may need to be forged, plans altered and strategies changed on the fly. Teams may suddenly find themselves needing to build partnerships with crews that they were competing with only moments before!
Lastly, how teams collaborate will have a dramatic effect on overall scores. Too great a focus on the competitive side may create an environment where it is difficult for anyone to do well. A focus on collaboration without purpose often leads to compromise, which may generate scores that seem fairer, but do not maximize opportunity or come close to achieving what's possible. Participants can make the mistake of leveraging collaboration to avoid conflict as opposed to achieving excellence. When this happens, no one is truly maximizing opportunity or together achieving what is possible. It becomes clear that collaboration is key to achieving unprecedented results for everyone involved if combined with commitment and purpose.

Learning Outcomes
Change of Course can be used to:

  • Examine the behaviors and actions necessary to optimize resources, build effective relationships and maximize performance within an environment of organizational change.
  • Explore how to optimize results in environments that may demand both collaboration and healthy sense of accountability for individual results.
  • Learning to adapt to changing circumstances and find creative ways to generate the desired results.
  • Examine the mindset and approaches necessary to create success in a less than certain environment.
  • Learn how to identify and remove barriers that lead to unintentional divisions between individuals, groups and levels within your organization.
  • Explore what it takes to successfully influence others towards productive outcomes.
  • Ensure alignment against a common goal while maintaining focus on individual accountabilities.
  • Experience the break-through results of partnering to optimize corporate results or grow overall market opportunities.
  • Stress the need for individuals to be accountable for results, even in environments of potential change.
  • Experience the impact of individual decisions in environments where there is an enormous degree of uncertainty and/or chaos.
  • Understand the difference between "activity" and "productivity."

Change of Course allows participants to experience the challenges created by differing approaches and beliefs. As small groups form, "cultures" clash. Participants experience and must navigate through the realities of the work environment they have created. The simulation provides a fun and practical way for participants to explore how to build evolving work environments that enhance effectiveness.

By design there is no standard debrief. We will leverage the principles that Change of Course explores in original and customized debriefing designed to address your specific objectives and business applications in your organization. In order to maximize learning opportunities the process includes debriefing at three distinct points over the course of the simulation so participants can discuss, learn and adjust by trying new approaches as the experience unfolds.
