Terra Nova
Terra Nova is an extraordinary training program. It is designed to deeply imprint participants with the experience of achieving more than they thought possible by learning to think and behave as a cohesive group of stakeholders. Participants learn to add value to others by stepping into their frames of reference and seeing their needs and goals the way they see them. Upon completion of the experience, participants clearly understand that the only way to see individual missions flourish is to ensure all individual missions are aligned and create a climate where the entire group's mission can be realized.
Welcome to Terra Nova
The Emperor has commissioned you to open up a freshly minted tract of land within the empire. Four guilds have been given the opportunity to build Terra Nova, Rulers, Builders, Entrepreneurs and Innovators. You and your fellow Guild-members now seek to make Terra Nova as prosperous as possible by fulfilling your missions.
Rulers have a passion for the Big Picture and are accountable for the ultimate prosperity of Terra Nova. Builders are the crafts guild that gets a sense of accomplishment by building. The busier they become, the happier they are. Entrepreneurs love to generate the much-needed revenue required to ensure the vision can be realized. Innovators live to implement as many value-adding ideas as possible.
Participants select their guild of choice and begin to learn about their mission, role and obligations.
In an effort to "do well" and "fulfill their mandate", participants typically assume it is a competition and that the goals of the various guilds are in conflict, or act in ways that unknowingly foster a competitive environment. Rulers begin to control Terra Nova instead of freeing up the system. Innovators become information-brokers and lose sight of the big picture and their role in it. Builders demand too much for their services and Entrepreneurs fail to optimize the capital or opportunities at their disposal.
Then something happens. Somewhere along the way, the Innovators use their "Stop the Clock" coupon. This creates 15 minutes of process check time. Participants intuitively realize that there has to be a better way. They begin to discover each other's goals, assumptions and frustrations. They start to understand each other's interests and begin to look out for them. They begin to get a glimpse of the big picture. Rulers make new decisions that are more empowering and start to free up the system. Entrepreneurs start to use their resources to provide Builders with materials and plans to build. The Innovators find more receptive channels through which to implement ideas that add value to the process as well as the final result. Terra Nova starts to grow and take shape before everyone's eyes.
In the end, there is a gratifying feeling as the kingdom of Terra Nova is physically spread out on the map. It is spectacular to see Terra Nova emerge in the form of silos, bridges, mega-bridges, telecommunications systems and a university spanning a distance of up to 12 feet long and 3 feet high.
Benefits of Terra Nova
Terra Nova is about achieving more than you thought possible by learning how to keep focused on the common mission, your team's mission and the mission of other teams, and integrate the three to produce cohesive decisions and actions.
- Participants learn that to be successful they have to think like stakeholders, see beyond their own area of concern and take ownership of big picture results.
- "Sharing the pie" becomes a clear 'revelation' in Terra Nova. If teams start out competing for a big piece, they end up with a big piece but a very small pie. By the end it is clear that it's better to have a 25% piece of a $100,000 pie than a 50% piece of a $25,000 pie.
- There are clear and measurable milestones built in that allow participants to see quantifiable links between the behaviors that drive results and the behaviors that diminish results.
- The debrief focuses on the self-authored behaviors that can be replicated in the real world.
Participants Experience that:
- Stepping out of their frame of reference and into others' allows them to create value as defined by their customer. A very quantitative measurement occurs (the revenue of the kingdom) that opens the eyes of participants to the direct connection between being able to step into each other's frames of reference and being able to achieve what's possible.
- Clearly understanding each other's goals, needs, frustrations and roles unblocks the logjams that occur by seemingly irreconcilable differences.
- Time spent gaining clarity on the big picture channels peoples' behaviors into optimized outcomes.
- Freeing up the system allows Rulers to achieve what's possible.
- Making their needs known in a way that appeals to others' interests allows Builders to build as much as possible.
- Discovering how they can get peoples' true needs met quickly allows Entrepreneurs to generate as much revenue as possible.
- Understanding the overt benefit of their value-adding idea as defined by the end-user allows Innovators to implement as many Value-adding ideas as possible.
Logistics
The Terra Nova exercise is 2.5 hours (not including debrief). The debrief is 40 minutes to 4 hours depending on the needs of the group and how much application is desired. Terra Nova can be run for groups as small as 15. There is no maximum group size.
By design there is no standard debrief. We will leverage the principles that emerge from Terra Nova in original and customized debriefing designed to address your specific business needs. One main facilitator is required. Large groups may require support staff.
